A Whole School Approach to Teaching and Learning

At Brightwater State School, our Student Support Services provide for the needs of the “whole child” by considering their academic learning needs, school engagement and/or overall social- emotional well-being. This Whole School Approach caters for the needs of students with educational support needs arising from disability; those who are gifted and talented; those who experience social-emotional challenges; those who are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island students and those learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D). The diversity and complexity of student learning needs attributed by their cultural and linguistic background and socio-economic status are also considered in the teaching and learning cycle.

A positive learning culture is promoted by the whole school staff through providing challenging, interactive and engaging learning experiences and by nurturing relationships with families, carers and the wider community. Students support their own wellbeing by being actively involved in their school and community and research on resilience shows a sense of belonging is critical for young people (Student Learning and Wellbeing Framework).

Our whole school approach directs support to the three layers of student need identified in the K-12 curriculum, assessment, and reporting framework.

Staff use these three layers to provide a continuum of tiered support with increasingly focused and personalised teaching and intervention at each successive layer. This continuum of support includes increasing levels of adjustments, monitoring of student learning, overall wellbeing and behaviour, and the needs-based involvement of support staff and professional experts.

Positive relationships with students and their carers, analysis of student data and ongoing monitoring of student progress are utilised to identify the appropriate layer of support. The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data process is utilised as a whole school process to identifying student’s disability area and level of adjustments and this is reviewed annually in Term 3.

At Brightwater, we facilitate an environment where every student given the right amount of support and time will achieve. Our support model consists of a support team of teachers and teacher aides, known as the WRAP Team.

The WRAP Team model is designed to support the needs of our diverse learners including their learning, school engagement, behaviour, and overall social-emotional wellbeing. The WRAP Team work collaboratively with classroom teachers, families, and sector deputy principals to adjust, adapt and modify learning environments and educational tasks to ensure inclusive practices and student participation and success. Our WRAP Team is across each sector within the school.

Students with a Hearing Impairment, Physical Impairment and/or Vision Impairment have access to the services of an Advisory Visiting Teacher in their relevant disability area. Advisory Visiting Teachers assist teachers with the curriculum adjustments and delivery of educational programs that target a student’s learning needs.

Other support professionals are also available to support students with disabilities through a triage referral process.  These include Guidance Officers, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Speech Language Pathologists and Regional Support Principal Advisors who may help to assess a student’s educational needs and assist teachers in developing programs.

Collaboration and family involvement are key factors to optimise inclusion and student success. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher, the WRAP Team or the HOSES if you have any concerns or questions.

Parent/Carer Identification, Referrals and Requests

At Brightwater State School, we support and encourage the involvement and collaboration of parents and caregivers, other organisations and external professionals as respected and valued partners in providing an inclusive education to all our students.

Parents/caregivers will occasionally identify a need or concern with their own child and seek the support of external professionals to offer further support, strategies and/or diagnosis. School support may be requested by parents/carers to support the collaboration and engagement with external health professionals.

School Engagement with External Providers

Our school receives a significant number of requests for school feedback letters, assessments, questionnaires and NDIS provider access from parents/carers and external providers.

To ensure requests are addressed appropriately and within a timely manner, all requests for school feedback regarding assessments, questionnaires or NDIS access requests from parents/carers and/or external providers are now required to be submitted to the Brightwater State School Student Services email box address:

All communication with External Providers requires consent to share documentation approved by the executive team prior to commencing liaison.

The following timeframes must be considered when requesting supporting paperwork:
